USA TODAY

As emerging social media platforms intern, I covered the national tree lighting ceremony.

Capital News Service

I was one of the lead reporters on Code Red. For this project, my colleagues and I spent 10 weeks interviewing residents in a predominantly black neighborhood who are disproportionately impacted by extreme summer temperatures. The project ran in the wire service and was picked up by news outlets that included The Washington Post, ABC News and The New York Times.

The project also won several professional awards: Scripps Howard Award in the Topic of the Year category; the National Press Foundation’s Innovative Storytelling Award; the News Leaders Association’s Punch Sulzberger Award for Innovative Storytelling; the Society of Professional Journalists’ first Sigma Delta Chi award for Collaborative Journalism; an honorable mention in the 2019 Philip Meyer Journalism Award competition and The National Institute for Health Care Management 2020 winner of its Digital Media Award.

Later that fall, My classmate and I did a follow up story focusing on the health effects of pregnant woman who dealt with the heat.
